Arc Flash Study vs. Risk Assessment vs. Short Circuit Study
These three services are often confused, requested interchangeably, and sometimes bundled — but they answer different questions.
| Service | What It Answers | Typical Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Short Circuit & Coordination Study | How much fault current can flow, and are protective devices set correctly to isolate a fault quickly? | Whole electrical system, usually a prerequisite for an accurate arc flash study |
| Arc Flash Study | What incident energy and PPE category applies at each piece of equipment? | All (or a defined subset of) panels/buses in a facility, typically requires short circuit data as an input |
| Arc Flash Risk Assessment | What are the hazards and appropriate protective measures for a specific task or piece of equipment? | Narrower/targeted — often used when a full facility study isn't yet available or isn't needed |
Which One Do You Need?
If you've never had any electrical safety engineering done, most facilities start with a combined short circuit + coordination + arc flash study, since the first two are prerequisites for accurate arc flash numbers. If you already have a study on file and just need to evaluate a new piece of equipment or a specific task, a targeted risk assessment may be sufficient and less expensive.
